Airport Spotlight: Austin Executive

As a service to our customers and readers, we thought this newsletter presented a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on our favorite or most frequent destinations and, in our opinion, the best FBOs that serve them. In this first newsletter, we’re shining a spotlight on our home airport, Austin Executive and Henriksen Jet Center.

Austin Executive Airport (KEDC) started in the 1960s as Bird’s Nest, a small private airstrip a few miles northeast of downtown. Ron Henriksen, developer of Henriksen Jet Center and Houston Executive Airport, purchased the property in 2007, added a 6000’ runway and a beautiful full-service FBO. The airport gained a control tower in 2018 and D airspace classification shortly thereafter. With RNAV approaches serving both directions of the main runway, Executive accommodates traffic year-round and in all weather conditions.

From downtown, Austin Executive is actually a shorter drive-time than the GA ramp at Austin-Bergstrom International. In most traffic condition, it’s less than a 25-minute commute. The FBO features all of the standard services and a friendly and willing staff. Gulfstream and Globals parked under the trademark 100’ awning are a regular site. The FBO has been ranked int the top 5% nationwide by Aircraft International News five years in a row.

Pilot and crew accommodations are not the least bit overlooked. With a large pilot lounge featuring several recliners, a large-screen television, a full-featured theater room, quiet rooms and easy broadband wifi access, it’s easy for a pilot to get spoiled. Crew cars are available and Go Rentals provides convenient rental car services.

Businesses on the field and in the FBO offices include full-service mechanic and avionics services, flight schools, new aircraft dealers including Cirrus, part 135 charter operators, and part 91 management firms.

One of the most unique features of the FBO is the Rolls Royce Olympus 593 Concord jet engine on display in the main terminal area. One of Ron Henriksen prize possessions, this piece of history is by itself worth a trip to the FBO.

If your private air travel takes you to Austin, we highly recommend Austin Executive and Henriksen Jet Center. APEX Flight Solutions is proud to call KEDC our home field, and we look forward to seeing you here soon.
